Steroids have always been in the midst of controversy, just like other substances, which are likely to be abused. The media has always projected steroids to be highly dangerous which can have negative side effects and can eventually lead to death. Even though bodybuilding steroids have been used widely enough the side effects associated with it are accepted within the safety limits. In order to be sure, patients should undergo a health check up from time to time.
The controversy got fuel, when famous football player Lyle Alzado was detected with cancer. The cause was diagnosed to be excessive use of steroid. Though, it is a well known fact that steroids contribute to having cancer, especially liver malignancy, since steroids have many adverse effects on the liver there is no direct theory to establish that the cause of death of the player was steroid abuse. Doctors, who found no relation in his using steroids and untimely death, also supported this.
Steroids are also known to be the cause of suicides among many youths. One of the well known side effects of using steroids is lowering of testosterone and even reduction in sexual desire. Thus by the time, the first dosage of steroids are complete, low testosterone levels in youths lead them to depression and ultimately suicide. This is not a proven fact though and there are no theories to establish this claim.
After late 1950's, there have been many theories, which suggested of a possible relationship between steroid usage and attempt to kill own self. Many medical journals in those times have supported this claim. Prior to steroids being declared illegal, Arnold Schwarzenegger had to undergo a heart surgery and he had openly admitted of using steroids all along his body building career. His heart surgery was interpreted by many as a result of steroid usage, which ultimately led to the left ventricle of his heart becoming thick and big.
Steroid makes one very vulnerable to mood swings, sleeplessness, and even depression, though again the theories are not established. Though some studies have even pointed out that steroid users develop psychological problems, manias and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, but proper evidence to these conclusions could not be established. The violence theory of steroid usage has been correlated to the fact that such users are a fit case for personality disorders and mainly represent the Type B.
