Making the decision to home school might be the easy part, now you have to select the right curriculum for your child. This is no easy task and can seem quite daunting, so break your tasks into sections and take your time.
Your child's learning style is an important aspect of selecting the right curriculum. It is in fact where I would begin the search. When learning style is referred to, it means does your child learn visually or by seeing the material, do they operate better from a hands on basis, or is a combination of the two more their style. Knowing this in the beginning will help you better define which curriculums you should start with.
Cost plays an important role for many of us. Curriculum prices can vary, so it is important that you establish a budget prior to starting your search. Each program will have a different offer, with some of them seeming to have far more substance than others. In some cases it seems like the packaging is just fancy. More often than not, the company is happy to send you a sample of their curriculum, which will help you tremendously by getting the feel for their product.
It should be no surprise that your personality is an important component. Your style could be more relaxed or laid back, so a regimented program might not work for you. It is important to be realistic about what will work for you and your family. You not getting along with a curriculum would be a bad reason your child's education to have suffered. Also, with the costs of curriculums being high, buying them until you get the right mix is a bad idea.
There are so many homeschooling groups and associations, yes in your area. Don't be afraid to talk to other parents and see what they are using. Ask questions, find out what they do and don't like about current and past programs. Find out if they are using one curriculum in its entirety or pieces from several.
Select the curriculum that will work for not only your personality, but will work for your budget and your child's learning style too.
