Do you have any idea about the first GTA car? You have no idea, believe me! I had no idea until today, either, I must confess that to you. Why? Well, think about the fact that first Grand Theft Auto was...a movie! Ron Howard's directorial debut was released in 1977, focusing on two lovers who get married in Las Vegas and then run away with her parents' Rolls-Royce so, just for the record, the first GTA car ever was one of those luxury cars, all right? Now, let's move on to the GTA game series, shall we?
About two decades after the movie, DMA Design, now known as Rockstar North created and published Grand Theft Auto, the first game in the series. The three cities in the game are notorious now, since we're talking about Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas, and the gameplay involves reaching a target score to complete, while only having five lives available. The system requirements of those days were 486 DX4/100Mhz CPU, 16 MB RAM and 1 MB Video RAM.
Talking about the GTA cars, there's not much to say, since the top-down view doesn't leave much room for creativity, but there are plenty of cars, trucks, and even motorcycles to steal and move around with.
While Grand Theft Auto 2, shortly known as GTA2, retained the top-down viewpoint from its predecessor, action is set in an unspecified time, and in a place only referred to as "Anywhere City." The player is Claude Speed, and he has to become the "King of the City," whatever that requires to be done. The cars in this game are much better than before, with the first hookable trailers in GTA appearing, and you can also drive taxis, buses, while the arsenal at your disposal ranges from fists to the deadly rocket launcher. There are some bonus vehicles hidden here and there, and the tank is the most impressive of all! :)
In 2001, things got much more interesting with GTA III, the first 3D title in the series. Here, we get to roam Liberty City, while the violent and sexual content surely was and still is a source of panic and controversy. The game introduced a "drive by shooting mode," along with many other improvements, and was heavily modded, so the number of cars available in GTA III can probably reach a few thousands. Even better, now you can fly!
GTA III was followed by Vice City, GTA: San Andreas and, finally, GTA IV! Each of these games managed to bring something new, give nightmares to parents whose kids played it and, with GTA IV, taking the GTA vehicles to the apogee.
I know I didn't give you any names, but this wasn't the purpose, from the start. GTA cars follow closely the history of the GTA game series, and it's enough to imagine moving from a top-down bidimensional viewpoint to full 3D madness, as you can see by looking at the GTA 4 Cars available all over the Web!
