What is a bookcase meant for? For most the bookcase is just meant for stacking not only the books but also the brochures, letters, greeting cards and sometimes even the newspaper and magazines. Hardly does anyone think that a messed up bookcase and be an irritation for the eyes. One must consider the basic feature of the bookcase being seen through. Under no circumstance can bookcase and a cupboard be on the same platform. Utmost care should be taken while setting the Bookcase. The following are the key issues of concern while setting the bookcase.
Style of stacking: Basically there are two types of stacking, one is horizontal the other is vertical. The horizontal stacking is advocated for the large and voluminous books. The life of these kinds of books decreases drastically if stacked vertically.
Base shelf, upper shelves and lower shelves: Place the large voluminous books on the lower shelf. This will add stability to the Bookcase and strengthen it. If you place these voluminous books on the upper shelves you may find difficulty in retrieving it moreover while retrieving it, it may fall on you causing damage to it and most probably hurting you as well. It is always better to place the large books on the lower shelf and the smaller books towards the upper shelves with the lightest, thinnest and the smallest books taking the topmost shelf.
Grouping: Vertical stacking gives a visual effect of the bookcase being taller than what it is. Group the books with reference to the size and shape with the largest books in the shelf occupying the periphery or the edge. Small gift articles can be used to demarcate the groups from each other. The groupings should be with reference to the number of books to be placed on the shelf. If the bookcase is large enough to accommodate all the books then it is ok but if the number of the books are less, then the groups have to be placed at some distance from each other. The book case should neither look over stacked nor under stacked. The appearance of the books in the bookcase should be soothing for the eye instead of irritating.
Baskets: Attractive baskets can be helpful to conceal paper, envelopes, broachers, and greeting cards that can make the bookcase unattractive.
Color: The color of the wall in the back ground should be such that the books kept on bookcase strike harmony with your home-interiors.
