Woodworking Is An Old Trade
Clinton Maxwell
Since the dawn of time people have molded wood into a number of different items. Over time the only thing that has been altered are the tools that are used to make the projects. Simple concepts like drilling, shaping and sawing have not gone through much of a change. However, while the functions have not changed, the technology has. Now tools are equipped with speed and precise to reduce the time and inaccuracy of cuts.
You can do without a lot of the gadgets that are on the market. There are some tools that you do not have to have. However, there are some that you will not get far without. Saving money on your workshop stock? Well there are three absolute must haves. With these staples you will be able to complete average projects.
1. Circular or Table Saw: Table saws can be connected to a table and circular saw are generally handheld. A table saw will give you the versatility that you need to make mitre cuts and use jigs when necessary. When using a hand held circular saw you will be able to produce curved or straight cuts. These saws can be used on non wood materials as well because they come with a variety of blades.
2. Router with Table: A router lets you make fancy cuts that create beautiful woodworking patterns. Having a table underneath the router simplifies the job because it allows you to use a fence to help hold the wood. Adjustable tables will let you work on the details of your project from a height that you are comfortable with.
3. Jig Saw: For wood projects that are outside of the molding area a jig saw will let you make different cuts that have added detail. Make toys that have cute little carvings. Come up with ideas for designs to go over the fireplace.
While there are endless woodworking machinery pieces and tools that professional wood workers need novice builders can get away with having less. Ideally the home improvement amateur will begin with the tools for their maiden voyage project and begin building from there. When choosing that first project it is wise to go with a simple project that only calls for a few tools. Go for simple jobs like Crown molding which is a low cost venture.
There are some cheap but valuable tools you should own. Hand tools are timeless. They are still used today much in the same way that they always have been. Chisels are about to transform a simple piece of wood into an intricate are form. If routers are too pricey, learn how to make your chisel produce the same quality figures that routers do.
