Fifty-four-year-old Peterson admitted that science was never his cup of tea. However, landing the role of forensic entomologist Gil Grissom has helped him embrace the field and even develop an interest in it, thus changing his personality.
Peterson revealed in a conversation with WOWOW that he wasn't good in science in his youth when he was in school. He added that his character "was so different" from him, and that it sparked an interest in him, being able to do something that he "was not familiar with."
"Since then, I've become very attracted to science, so it was a good thing for me," Peterson said. "I don't kill insects anymore. I used to swat flies and my wife used to make me chase the spiders. I have a whole backyard full of spiders now, webs everywhere. They're just crawling around the house."
In talking about his character, Peterson said that Gil Grissom was "very in touch with his childhood," thus, giving him a unique perspective on reality and what his job is all about. Moreover, he says that Grissom's imagination and creativity were tools which helped him move about the scientifics of his job. Being childlike is also helpful, as it enables him to play around with work, taking things lightly despite the weight of "violence and inequity."
Thirty-nine-year-old Fox says that her character and Catherine Willows' Marg Helgenberger are strong and professional women, thus making Fox lucky to portray the forensic scientist.
"They're completely intellectual and at the same time they feel very real. They feel like real people to me. It feels like a person that somebody could actually be," she said.
No news yet on what happens with Fox's character, Sara, who was left trapped beneath a car somewhere in the desert in last season's finale. Executive producer Naren Shankar assured fans that the upcoming season's premiere entitled "Dead Doll" will give a satisfying resolution to the cliffhanger.
"No loose ends will be left dangling at the end of the first episode," Shankar said.
CSI's brand new season will air on Thursday, September 27 on CBS.
