The history of candle making dates back all the way to the time of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and the Cretan Greeks. These two civilizations made candles out of beeswax, which is the available material to that period. Soon after came the Romans. Before the Romans expanded their empire, they made candles out of Tallow. Tallow is a type of fat rendered from animals like cattle or sheep and this raw material hardens on room temperature.
As everybody know, before the invention of the light bulb and the discovery of electricity, people back then used things to light and maintain fire to light up houses and streets during the night. Candles and lamps were the most common things that can hold and maintain flames and a lot people from all around the world had many uses for them.
In different religions, candles have been used, and are still used to perform homage and ceremonies to deities. Christians, more specifically in the Catholic (and other Catholic sectors) and Orthodox, candles placed on altars are lit before a member say his or her prayers. The lighting of the altar's candle symbolizes the light of God.
In Buddhism, candles are lit to pay respect to Buddha along with the lighting of incenses. The lighting of the candle represents the light of the teachings of Buddha all the way to the enlightenment of nirvana.
In Judaism, the most popular ritual of candle lighting involves the celebration of Hanukkah. This eight day celebration is done by lighting an eight-branched candelabra or candelabrum. The eight candles placed in each branch represent the eight day miracle where a group of Jews lit a lamp containing olive oil as fuel that is only good enough for one day's use but the flame on the lamp lasted eight days.
Improvements on candle-making methods and materials have not changed until the 1700s where oil from whales, specifically oil from sperm whales called spermaceti, which provided a longer lasting burn than the precious candle-making materials. Then in the early 1800s, paraffin was discovered and made candles much cheaper, cleaner (in terms of soot residue) and odorless.
Nowadays, with environmental awareness to solutions to air pollution and global warming given more emphasis, candle manufacturers have ventured more into producing candles made of natural and environmentally friendly materials mostly derived from plants. Fashion, Class and Trend have also created demands for new type of candles which are scented.
The Yankee Candle Company offers both of these features with their products which are fragrantly scented from botanical and fruit essences and blends, and are also made from environmental friendly materials such as soy-based wax.
The history of Yankee Candles started with a teenage boy who made a gift for his mom for Christmas. Mike Kittredge was only 16 years old when he melted crayons and formed them into a candle. His neighbor saw how beautifully he made his candle crayon and bought it from him. Realizing how popular his creation was, he created more candles and started selling it to his neighbors and classmates that eventually lead to the founding and establishment of Yankee Candles.
