Shopping For Antique Collectibles Can Be A Daunting Task!
Brooke Hayles
This may come as a surprise, but inside the homes of most people there is an antique collectible stored away somewhere. The vast majority of people have no idea of the value of much of what they own. That table which used to belong to Aunt Nancy or the curiosity that you picked up at a yard sale could turn out to be an antique collectible.
It is highly likely that most people have more than one antique collectible lying around somewhere. Maybe you have an old doll or teapot - perhaps there is an old chair your neighbor gave you, take a close look at some of the bottles you have in your bathroom. You may find it hard to believe but these ordinary items are joining the ranks of the most popular collectibles. It may be an idea to clear out the attic - who knows what you may find.
Antique collectibles come in any number of shapes and forms. You will find people who collect cigar cases while others have a thing about wall clocks. No matter what the item is, somebody could be looking for just the thing that you have found in the attic. If you think you have something that a collector may be willing to buy - how are you to know whether it is simply rubbish or a real antique collectible? There are some simple guidelines which will help you recognize a genuine collectible from all the fake stuff around.
Steer clear of the antique fairs that have a lot of the same kind of item, it could be that these items are modern replicas. Don't bother with very dirty items, the seller might be trying to pass it off as older than it is - reputable dealers usually clean things up in the hope of a sale. Be wary of buying wooden furniture that is made of smaller pieces of wood. Most wooden antique collectible furniture tends to be constructed out of large pieces of wood without the knots, modern wooden furniture, on the other hand, is made from smaller pieces.
It is well worth visiting flea markets, yard sales, estate auctions and even church bazaars in your search for collectibles. Be on the look out for unexpected surprises that may just be waiting for you to pick them up. If you do find something you think might be an antique collectible, then be sure to take special care of it. Antiques are best kept away from direct sunlight and moisture as both these things can damage the surface of an item. If you have something that is really valuable then a glass case is a worthwhile investment for the protection of your antique.
Summary:
In your search for an antique collectible, avoid anywhere that you suspect might be carrying fakes. Look after your investment. And finally take a good look before throwing out what you think maybe junk. It may be worth taking a second look to see whether it is some kind of collectible.
