One billion Internet users mean one billion potential visitors that could visit your website. However, it is actually impossible for any website to reach that number of visitors. The software company, Microsoft is the only one that has anywhere near that number of visitors. Not surprisingly, the founder, Bill Gates, is the richest man on earth!
To market a product on the Internet, you must first know your potential customers. Where are they located? What is the demography of your customers? How old are they? What is the range of their income? Which countries are they from?
As an example, if you would like to sell a book on how to lose weight on the Internet, you must know who your potential customers are. Obviously, the book is targeted at oversized adults. Therefore, they are your niche market.
It is pointless to promote your book to children or users who are already in good shape or golden aged people who are no longer worried about their weight. So perhaps your niche market here would be teenagers and adults.
Your products should also be focused (narrowed down) to make it easier for you to search for your target market. For example, you could focus your book on how to lose weight for women. This way, you are able to focus your promotions to ladies only.
The technique in gaining your niche market also depends on your product or service. With the right niche market, it would be easier for you to promote your products.
Having a focused product helps your customers to buy from you. This is because buyers usually prefer products or services that suit them perfectly. For example, look at these two books:
Title of Book 1: "Losing weight for children, adults, the elderly, men and women."
Title of Book 2: "Losing weight for women."
If you are a woman, which book would you choose? The answer is too obvious- you would buy the second book, as it suits you more.
In short, the secret of an Internet business is to provide products for a niche market.
My advice is, given the choice, this third book would be a better product to sell on the Internet:
Book 3: "Get back in shape after pregnancy."
Can you see the advantage here? Using this technique, you can now focus your products for your niche market. And although your niche market is smaller, it is easier for you to promote your products and services. And remember, even though it is smaller, on the Internet, the number still reaches thousands- or even millions!
