Creating Your Unique Selling Point
Ken Mathie
No matter what you're selling, whether it is your own product or a resale rights package, you need to have a unique selling point, or what they call in the advertisement business, a hook. Rather than try to explain what that is, the best way to illustrate this is with examples from different industries. The same principal applies to resale rights.
Mmmm mmmm good. That's what Campbell's soups are, mmmm mmmm good. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know the ever popular Campbell's song that goes back as far as the 1960s. What comes into your mind when you hear it? For most people it's that if they eat Campbell's soups they are going to taste, not just good, but mmmm mmmm good. This is a unique selling point and has stood the test of time to make Campbell's the number one soup maker in the world.
Nike. Just do it. This is a no nonsense ad that suggests that if you buy a pair of Nike sneakers and put your mind to doing whatever you want to do, you'll do it, not only well, but to your very best. Today, Nike is one of the top sports wear companies in the world.
Taking this to the Internet, without endorsing any particular Internet companies, there is an Internet company that has been around for 5 years who's sales pitch is "Become A Thoroughbred Of Internet Marketing." What do you think goes through people's minds when they see this sales pitch? Well, think about what the word thoroughbred stands for. It is the ultimate in race horses. Every breeder wants one. Thoroughbreds are winners. So why wouldn't all Internet marketers want to become winners? This sales pitch turned this company into one of the longest lasting companies on the Internet to this day when most companies are out of business in 2 years.
Another company put up a sales page a few years back with the following headline.
"How We Banked $27,293,17 In Only 30 Days From Home."
Can you figure what the selling point is?
It's the odd dollar amount. When people see that amount they think to themselves that this must be the truth because they're not giving me some round figure. This must have been exactly what they made. Now, this may or may not have been true, but it worked. This was the top selling book at the time.
I'm not going to lie. Creating your own unique selling point is not easy. It takes a lot of imagination. But the way to start is to look at the product that you're selling. Take it apart and list all the features that it has. List all the things that it is designed to do. Then make a list of possible hooks. Don't censor yourself. Make them as insane as you want. Out of the madness something will strike you as being the winner. It may not happen in a day or even a week, but if you keep working at it, it will happen.
