Dogs Make Good Pets
Steve Peters
The Mastiff dog breed is originally from England and is part of the sheepdog family. This large animal can be a wonderful indoor pet. The Mastiff dog breed gets its name from the word massive, and the word Mastiff in some languages translates into mountain-like. In Germany it just simply means dog.
This gentle giant is known to be very mild tempered and not easily angered, although who would really want to provoke this huge dog? The Mastiff is known to be a very casual and calm breed. Most of the time, the dog will not attack someone trying to gain entry to your house. Basic human fear toward unknown animals allow the dog to be perceived as a threat to burglary. A Mastiff dog drools profusely and gets along well with children, because of how large it is though it might be too large to have babies around it.
This particular breed of dog is considered highly intelligent. Basic commands, as well as complex ones, are easily teachable. These dogs only live to be about 10 years old due to sheer size. Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a health problem associated with the Mastiff dog breed. (Coronary heart disease). Exercise has been proven to keep your dog healthy and strong.
The Mastiff breed of canine is considered to be a low maintenance breed. Routine nail trimmings, baths, using a brush, and dry shampooing will keep your dog looking like the champion that you know he can be. The dog doesn't cope with hot weather very well, It is not advisable to have this breed of dog outdoor in warm temperatures.
The Mastiff comes in many different breeds including the English Mastiff, bull Mastiff, Victorian Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro, American Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, and a number of others. Mastiffs are very family oriented dogs, and are known to be playful as pups, gassy (flatulent) as adults, with loud snoring being quite typical of most breeds.
If you plan to purchase a Mastiff anytime in the near future, It is important to review your home owners insurance policy to make certain that it covers your dog's breed. Due to their size, perception to the public, and owner negligence, this dog has been given bad reputations. Always note that if you own a Mastiff you will want to check that your home owners insurance policy will still cover your home. If you have a Mastiff be sure to go through the proper training with your dog. While they do make great pets, an untrained Mastiff can be a very stubborn and controlling dog at times, if authority is not established early.
