Since their creation, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish has constantly been part of an Independent Conference. In 1999, the team finished with a 5-7 record, giving them a ranking of 43rd out of 117 teams. In 2000, the team enhanced their preceding record, winning nine games and down only three. In 2001, the Irish ended with a 5-6 record. The year 2002 became a very triumphant season. The Fighting Irish won ten games, having defeat only three. A lack of depth is sting Notre Dame, which has struggled late in its last two losses, to Louisville in overtime and to Syracuse. The Irish are playing only seven deep appreciably and its top four players are going 35 minutes plus every game. Some of the players have played 95 percent of the minutes they could have played.

The results was that against Louisville's ,it was constant pressure, the Irish were outscored by 14 points in overtime and Syracuse broke open a 74-69 game by outscoring the Irish, 19-5, the rest of the way. They are doing this despite spectacular play from their star named Harangued, who on Jan. 17 against Syracuse had his 10th consecutive points game and eighth straight double-double as he scored 25 points.
