Right here at the start I want to make sure you understand that when I use the word ‘success’ I am using it with your definition. Each of us defines the word differently, and that’s fine. There are many people who living their life in a way that absolutely brings joy to them every day. For these it has nothing to do with big houses, cars, or all the latest toys. They have found either a job, a business, or even a home based business that they really love and they are very comfortable with the income they are making or receiving.
There are three reasons many people fail to become successful:
1.Lack of Discipline. Don’t you just hate this one? Hate it or not we all realize that there is great truth in these three words. Nothing is accomplished in life without discipline. I would venture to say that all of us are disciplined – to some degree or other. And that’s the rub. I am very disciplined about exercising for a few days or weeks. But as the time goes on I don’t always stick with the plan. Something comes up or an interruption and I seem to forget immediately about the excise plan I had committed myself to do. When I finally remember what I was supposed to be doing it is always much more difficult to start again.
The same is true when it comes to success. I am involved in a home based business and have found that everyone I talk to wants to be successful. They want to get those sales and receive those checks every week. They want to have a large group. But after a few weeks many simply disappear from sight. They were disciplined at first. They read the materials. They listened to a few training calls. But then they started missing the training calls and they wondered why they weren’t making the sales. They decided they would write their own script and then wondered why they couldn’t close sales. Discipline is needed to follow the script.
2.Lack of Focus. I wonder if this one doesn’t just flow out of the first one. When you lose discipline you are going to lose focus. Focus means being able to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. Many of us think that we are so good at everything that we can be thinking about our next project while we are working on the current one. That’s when mistakes, miscalculations and waste happens. If you are going to do something and do it well you need to think about or focus on the topic. If you half-heartedly do something don’t expect success.
3.Lack of Vision. Always know “why" you start something and especially if it is something big. What is the reason for beginning? What is it that you are expecting to accomplish? Why do you want to accomplish it? The bigger the project the bigger your “why" has to be. In the realm of the home based business you have to know what it is that has caused you to start in the business. People want to be able to stay home with their kids or family but a week or three after they have started the business they quit. What happened to their vision? Evidently it was only a wish, a passing dream or passing fancy. It definitely wasn’t a vision.
I know, it is much easier to blame the business, the product, the up-line or the plan rather than take the responsibility ourselves. But I can’t make you successful nor can you make me successful. You can give me the tools, but if I don’t use the tools correctly success will elude me. If I lack discipline, focus or vision success is not likely to be mine.
