How many of us simply accept what life has dealt us, as though we had no choice but to end up where we are? Are we really so powerless and unable to achieve otherwise? How many of us stop to question "the system" and wonder if there is a better, healthier, more relaxed way to making a living, without getting caught up in the stress and rush of today's rat race?
We were taught to go to school, to try hard to achieve the best grades we could, maybe go on to tertiary education, get a degree and finally, apply all of our hard-earned knowledge to the end result - a career. This was in the hope that we might earn a good living with a decent salary that would carry us through the rest of our working life and maybe even set us up for retirement. Those who have achieved in this way believe they are at the successful end of the system's spectrum.
If you didn't do so well at school, university was out of the question. You may have ended up with no particular career, just a job that requires you to work eight hours per day. You possibly tough it out from Monday to Friday, only to gasp with relief when the two days off that you are allowed finally arrive. If you are ambitious and want to climb the corporate ladder, you might end up working more than your designated eight hours and spend half to two-thirds of your time at some office or company. And as you strive for successive promotions, you are rewarded with higher levels of responsibility which may require you to work some of your weekend too, just to stay on top.
The trade-off for working longer hours is less time at home with your loved ones and less time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you chose to become a "career" person, there may not be any loved ones waiting at home for you at the end of your day, other than perhaps your pet. If you are trading time for money, why is trading more time for more money to buy more 'things' looked upon as success? Who invented this system anyway? There must be a smarter way.
At the other end of the spectrum are those who depend on "the system" for handouts in the form of social security, litigation or inheritance. This is NOT the answer either. Why? Because the handout mentality emasculates mankind and diminishes one's self-esteem, self-worth and self-respect. It is absolutely not the way to go.
Having been caught up in "the system" for the last thirty-two years since I left school, at one point holding down three part-time jobs in order to "get ahead", I began to seriously question if there was a smarter way and what I discovered thankfully changed my life.
