The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are the athletic teams that represent Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (also known as Rutgers University). In all, there are 27 sports teams. The recent university's president is Richard Levis McCormick. At first, the Rutgers athletes were well known as Queensman, as the elder university name was the Queens College. In 1925 a new mascot was chosen, the chanticleer.

In each and every one there are 30 Rutgers University teams participating in the NCAA.The home of men's and women basketball teams is the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Its original name is the RAC (the Rutgers Athletic Center). It was open in November 1977. The seats capacity is eight thousand people. In the first game the Rutgers Scarlet Knights win over their competitor Seton Hall. But conditions right now are pretty tight. Rutgers has lost last 13 out of 14 league games.

Before 1977 the College gym was used for playing basketball. The basketball men's team first played in 1906. The first three games were lost, but after some year they set a 3-12 record. For the subsequently five years the play was suspended. Only in 1913 the team improved activity. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights women's basketball team began playing in 1974. The first game finished with their conquest over the Princeton basketball team. The most successful season for the team was the 1975-1976 season, when they became the winners more then 30 times. The smallest number of victories the team gained in the 1906-1907 season.
In 1989-1990 seasons the team scored the highest number of 3-point goals 216. In 2002-2003 seasons the Rutgers Scarlet Knights beaten the Syracuse University, the National Champions, and afterward won over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by 13 points.
