Deciding On Getting A Companion For Your Dog
Kelly Marshall
Even though some people see nothing wrong with having only one dog in the house, others may see the need for an additional four-legged pet running around. Of course, if you do not have the right size of home for this then there is not much you can do but if you have the space then your dog would enjoy having a companion. During the times that you are not able to sit and play with your pet, he or she will enjoy having the company of another dog. It gives the dog another being on its level, a creature that it can easily relate to.
It is a very good idea for those families who leave the house for long periods of time throughout the day. Whether it is for work or school, your dog does not like being left behind. Generally, dogs will abandoned each and every time you walk out the door. To help ease the discomfort the dog is going through during these times you can bring in another dog. You will though want to be careful about deciding which type of dog to bring in. You want to make sure that the breed is one that gets along well with other dogs or you will simply be setting yourself up for trouble.
If your dog is older, then you need to first figure out if a puppy is a good idea or whether you should adopt an older dog. To do this, simply take your dog to a park, a friend's house, a pet store that allows dogs inside, or just about anywhere that you can think of that has puppies around. See how your dog interacts with puppies. If your dog seems irritated by them, then bringing a small puppy into the house may not be the best idea in the world. You may find that your dog becomes sort of parental around the younger pup, showing it the ways and keeping it in line. If this happens, then a young pup is what you should bring in the home. This will give your dog a companion and give it a sense of a job and purpose.
Of course it is important that while the young pup will learn a lot simply by watching the older dog, you are still going to have a lot of training to deal with. This is basically like starting all over again but you will soon be able to see that the efforts were worth it. Take your time in deciding on the breed and the age of the new dog and everything will work out just fine.
If you barely have enough room in your home for one dog, let alone two of them, then getting your dog a companion at this time would not be the right thing to do. Dogs need space and without that space they will not have extremely happy lives. So make sure that you are not over crowding your home with dogs to the point that no one has a place to stretch out relax and run around.
