Dust, smudges, smears and grime affect the laptop monitors' display and the difference is quite amazing. Looking at a dirty monitor is like looking outside through a screen door. Laptops have what is called an LCD screen, which translates to Liquid Crystal Display. LCD screens are fragile and should be cleaned with extra care or risk permanent damage, such as permanent white/yellow stains and scratches. There are also several warnings throughout this article that help to avoid damage to your laptop screens.
Warning: Never put your fingers on the LCD screen as this can burn out pixels.
It is perfectly fine to leave the monitor on during the cleaning process but if you turn it off you will be able to see the smears and smudges much better.
Always use a very SOFT COTTON cloth when cleaning LCD screens or electrostatic cloths used for cleaning eyeglasses. An old soft cotton t-shirt also works well.
Warning: Do not use paper towels, towels, rags, napkins or toilet paper as they may scratch the surface.
Dry Dusting of LCD Screen:
If your monitor is not too dirty you can use the cotton cloth for dry dusting. Another great trick for dusting laptop screens is using dryer sheets, which naturally attract dust and work great. Gently wipe (without pressure) the screen in one direction starting at the top and working your way down.

There is an easy, effective and very inexpensive homemade solution that will result in a shiny clean LCD screen and deliver a whole new viewing experience.

Homemade LCD Cleaning Solution:
Ingredients:
Isopropyl Alcohol (only isopropyl alcohol will do)
Distilled Water (Do not use tap water because it contains salts that can whiten your screen)
Cleaning Solution Recipe:
Mix equal parts distilled water to isopropyl alcohol (example: 1/2 cup water to 1/2 cup isopropyl alcohol)
Warning: Never pour or spray any cleaning solutions directly onto the screen as this can short circuit your monitor.
Apply a very small amount of the solution ONTO THE CLOTH and very gently (without pressure) wipe the screen in one direction from the top of the screen to the bottom. That's all folks!
