Treating a patient's sickness is not the endeavor of one person alone, but like many things in life, entails the teamwork of a number of professionals from different medical fields. People study medicine and learn about health in order to give patients the best possible diagnosis. Doctors and health workers dedicate their lives to helping others, especially those who have limited resources to pay for their medical needs. Some groups of health workers even go on medical missions just to bring vaccine and other medical supplies to various communities.
As a patient, you need to familiarize yourself with the health care professionals who are there to help you with your needs. It is also a good idea that you give them due respect since they show you professionalism and compassion when you are in need of medical help. It is also important that you remember their names so that the next time you are in the hospital, you can greet them and thank them for the service that they have given you. When eventually you have established a good relationship with the doctor or health worker, you may well be in a position to get some favors from them and perhaps even get discounts.
Perhaps the most important health care professionals are doctors. They give instructions to nurses as well as to other doctors on what your treatment will be. In addition, when our lives are at risk, doctors are the ones who spend countless hours figuring out what the problem is and give the most appropriate diagnosis they can. In some countries, individuals or patients can sue the doctor if they feel that they have not been treated correctly. When this happens, the doctor is questioned and if it is proven that he did not treat the patient correctly, his license to practice is suspended or even revoked.
Another group of health workers who you need to be familiar with are the nurses. They do rounds to check on the patients recovering from surgery and other procedures. Nurses check if the patient's blood pressure is normal, if wounds are healing as expected, if the patient is taking his medication and other vital things that need to be checked. Since nurses work on shifts, try to befriend the nurse who usually comes into your room to check on you. She can give you updates on what the doctor's current instructions are, and what you can expect over the next 24 to 48 hours. If there is something you do not understand, you can ask her because she is quite likely to have the information that you are seeking.
Nevertheless, whether you are a patient or a relative of the patient do remember the standard procedures when you are inside the hospital. Do not smoke in the room or in the hallway. Keep your voice down so that the other patients are not disturbed, as they need to rest. When you eat inside the room, make sure that you clean everything away afterwards. Also, be on your best behavior because this is a public place. Even though you have paid for the room, you are just staying there temporarily. This means that you must avoid damaging any of the equipment or things in the room since none of them actually belong to you.
