What do you think when someone mentions woodworking? You may just think about all the power tools that are needed to shape your wood and make wonderful pieces of art. You will find that a beginner can become confused and not know what to purchase. As for your tool collection, you will need to consider the basics and eventually you can add more expensive power tools; however, you don't want to over look the small tools. The following tools are needed for a simple and inexpensive woodwork collection.
First you will need to get yourself some clamps. You will need to get a variety of types or sizes, but you will find that they are mostly inexpensive and you can pick them up whenever you see a good deal. They are sturdy and will last a long time so you will even want to consider using some old and used clamps, because they will work just as good as the new clamps.
You will also need to purchase a bench chisel. Again, these also come in a variety of sizes and you will need several chisels, ranging from ? to an inch. You will also need things like a good, stiff wire brush. Also, consider some of the power tools like saws. You could go all out and get some of the expensive power tools, but really all you need is a back saw, tenon saw, and a dovetail saw. You will need to make sure that the blades are sharpened.
As for the small things, you will need a few planes, and scrapers. You will need to get at least a block plane and a jointer plane so that you can begin your wood working. Also, consider that you will need some filers that are good in size and that will be sturdy. Don't forget other things like hammers, mallets, wrenches, screwdrivers, tape measures, steel rulers, levels, squares, and awls. You will also need a putty knife, pliers, protractor, and utility knife. Most of these hand tools for woodworking you may even have already.
Keep in mind that when you are setting up your own shop, you will be able to pick your prices. You will also be able to build a workshop that will be very inexpensive, but you will need to keep it simple and look for the sales. You will find that hand tools are very affordable, but the more you get into the power tools; you'll find that it can get very expensive for each tool. You will want to make sure that you get good quality brand names too. You will find that if you put out the money for better brand names, you will get a better return on the tool.
