Isn't it funny how the things you want to protect from your kids are always the things that get found first? This seems to just be a rule of thumb but there are a few tricks you can use to keep prescription drugs out of the hands of your kids. Your attitude towards your children and prescription drugs is paramount. If you outwardly show your children your concerns about them finding your medications then they might not understand and curiosity will over rule. It's better to explain how dangerous prescription drugs can be without letting them know that you keep some in the house somewhere. You can do this with things like vitamin tablets which aren't harmful but can pass as medicine. Tell your children that on the packet there are rules to stop you getting sick and if you take too much then you could need to go to hospital. Say it simply, and ask if they understand, but don't mention your own medication.

If your child knows that you take medication and is interested in it then you need to find a very safe place to keep it. Of course keeping it out of reach is a classic tactic, but when they get to a certain age children are fearless about climbing pretty much anything. A great idea is that if you have a neighbour who you have a good relationship with, then you can ask them to hold on to your medications for you. Also, having a locked box in your bedroom is a great idea but you'll need to be vigilant about where the keys are.
