Unique Sculptures Crafted In Agate
Anita Satin Choudhary
Much of the agate is generally in the color schemes of blue flowing into a whitish gray tone. But there are many other colors of the agate that are distinguished by their specific colors and designs. The Carnelian agate is known for its yellowish-orange and reddish tones but is translucent in design. Agate has formations known as Bloodstone and the dark green Opaque.
Agate is an exquisitely elegant stone naturally formed within gas cavities that occurs when lava solidifies. This precious stone is also known as chalcedony and has been a part of the artistic world for many centuries and used to make small ornamental objects, jewelry, and sculptures. It is in Asia Minor that the name of chalcedony originated, directly from the ancient Sea of Marmara and the town of Calcedon, which were the active trading center for numerous gems and economy depended on that. It was in this specific region that agate was widely used with gold and other precious gems to make items such as goblets, idols, carvings, inlay with Agate and used to craft other functional objects.
Agate is a varied colored precious stone that ancient cultures regarded as an object, when worn to make for a more 'agreeable and persuasive person' along with being in 'God's favor'. In Germany during the mid 1800's, agates of brown or black persuasion that had a white ring in the middle were believed to be to ward off the evil eye if kept upon on their bodies. The special agate was the guardian spirit and precious stone cutters were busy with nothing else, but to cut agate for each person's protection.
Since Agate is a 6.5 to a 7 on the scale of hardness, it is a sturdy stone perfect to create carvings from. Much of the agate is generally in the color schemes of blue flowing into a whitish gray tone. But there are many other colors of the agate that are distinguished by their specific colors and designs. The Carnelian agate is known for its yellowish-orange and reddish tones but is translucent in design. The Chrysocolla is of intensified bluish-green or of a light blue color. The translucent Chrysoprase is of a light to medium yellowish-green tone. Agate has formations known as Bloodstone and the dark green Opaque. The variety of Blue Lace Agate is translucent lavender down to light blue but along with the many variations in colors are the beliefs of mystique, prosperity and healing.
With a range of colors, variations in design and trans-lucidness, it is no wonder that artisans for centuries have been making sculptures in miniature formations. These sculptures come in every imaginable formation possible. Many historical agate sculptures were expressions of the cultural around the artists whom created these extraordinary pieces of beauty and elegance. Agate is a precious stone that is hard enough to with stand the hands of time and still hold its elegant demur characteristics of the time period the artistic natural form was created in.
