Starting An E-Business? No Idea, Huh? You're 3 Steps Away!
Ali Baraka
You've got the e-business bug. Now what? Starting your new internet business can be a tough proposition as it is, let alone trying to figure out what it is you can do or want to do. If you're one of the lucky few who already have an idea on what you want to do, then ignore this article and go about your e-business. You are head and shoulders above 99% of your peers! The rest of us have to pore and brainstorm and ruminate and sometimes that's not even enough. Rest assured that there are methods other successful people are using that can get you past this crucial moment in your endeavor.
You're not the first to have that mental block. Many of us in this industry have the inspiration before the idea. Remember that once this is past you, your work is immediately cut out for you. Your focus can then be on the all-important motivational aspect of your new business. But first, learn these helpful methods to get to first base.
Here's a commonly used problem solving method that's as simple as it is effective:
1. Put on that thinking cap, break out your pen and paper, and proceed to brainstorm all your interests in bullet points. Write them down without bias and no matter how ridiculous you may think it is. If you like to make toys for goldfish, write it down. Just be sure to write as many of your interests and hobbies as you possibly can.
2. Narrow your list down to that which you have the most passion for and are the most knowledgable about. Eliminate the ideas that are impractical or that you care for the least. This may take some effort. You may have a passion for something you have little knowledge of, or be an expert in something you don't care for. Your final answer is probably going to be a blend of both attributes.
3. Perhaps by now, you've got your idea. For those who are still struggling, try this: If you've narrowed it down to a handful of ideas, write down different aspects of each idea, sub-categories if you will. You may surprise yourself and find that one of your ideas has a good long list of categories that you can draw from for the knowledge you need to move forward. Knowing about your subject will give you an advantage down the road.
Choose your subject, then take action! You can (will) be successful at this stuff and you may find later that it wasn't really that difficult. There are many other beginners just like you who are experiencing success in this business by following steps like these in the beginning. This is all part of learning something new, so don't become discouraged. Just make sure that persistence and discipline are at the forefront, and always remember, no matter what, make it FUN!
