It's all about the power of the first step. You could think, well, I am never going to take that first step because there are so many obstacles in the way - I have to get fit, get some kit, lose some weight, find some time, etc etc blah blah blah! I am sure you get the idea - it's like when you know you have to take action and there are so many great displacement activities - cleaning the house, answering the mail - all stuff that can wait! Yet we chose to do that rather than what we know can and will make a difference to us. What's that about!?
Personally, I've been thinking about getting back out and doing some exercise for ages, and even though I coach, it's still a challenge sometimes to take that first step. Think back to a challenge or goal that you are facing - what's stopping you taking the first step? Taking that first action takes you one step closer to your overall goal - what have you got to lose? If you don't take action today - you may never do it! This thought has even got me writing my first ezine - it's amazing how the thought "I should really practice what I preach" makes to your actions! I'd already taken some steps on this, signing up for the newsletter sight, the next step like the next step that turns into a jog, is just a step on the way. Before you know it, you're there
Taking that first step can be nerve-wracking but so, so exciting. Here are 5 tips for taking action today to achieve your goals...
1. Get ready... set your goal by thinking about something that is really important to you. If you don't have an emotional connection to what you want to do, and feel animated about achieving it, what's the point? Set your goal in the now and the positive to help you visualise what this looks like "I'm running the half marathon...and I'm loving it!"
2. Find yourself a fun way to do it... Why do we set out to sabotage ourselves? Think with confidence about your goal, and what has worked for you in the past, and what you love to do. How can you link this to your goal? For instance - my goal of running is about 2 things - getting outside and also toning up and losing some weight (OK, that's really 3 things!) - but I hate the gym. Therefore - I know that I need to do things to achieve my getting fit/ spending some time outside that help me with this- running, biking, walking...what works for you?
3. Set the goal that works for you - but still feels challenging. If you don't like to run - don't run! If you want to run, but the thought of a marathon or half marathon fills you with horror, don't do it! It isn't about setting the biggest or most "bragworthy" goal, but doing something that you feel excited about, in what ever area works for you
4. Decide on your first step - and do it! Don't procrastinate, don't think about it - just do it (as a well known advertiser says!) Honestly. It's so powerful you'll want to take the next step...and the next... 5. Celebrate! You've just taken the first step on the way to achieving your goal! Celebrate it, share it with a friend, shout it from the rooftops! Love the fact you are on your way!
