Vegetarianism In India

India is the largest republican that houses the most vegetarians than any other country in the world. Being a cosmopolitan country due to the number of invasions it suffered, there are many religious sects. In fact there are more than 2000 languages registered in the country, this is besides the smaller sects and tribes.

Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Punjabis are few of the broader communities that house many more sects under their umbrella. Majority of the Hindus are vegetarians. The Jain caste is cautiously strict about their food. They do not include eatables that hurt animals and insects in any way. Hence roots like onions, garlic, beetroot etc. are all out of their diet.

But they are not as strict as Vegans. These people are not necessarily from any sect. They do not eat but also stay away from any non-vegetarian product or by-product. Hence products like fur, lipsticks, milk, cheese or any other by-product is off their need chart. They eat vegetables in the raw and stay healthy with the right mix of vegetables.

Even though the census reports a majority of Indians are non-vegetarians, many of them are turning to vegetarians. This is seen in most of the cities as urbans are trying to stay healthy by eating right. It has been discovered that a carefully planned vegetarian diet can give you all the protein, amino acids and vitamins that are required for daily living.

Fruitarianism is another category of vegetarians where only fruits in correct quantity are consumed to get all the required strength. They will not eat vegetables or non-vegetarian dishes and will survive only on fruits. A survey conducted shows that they stay as healthy as any other vegetarian or non-vegetarian and are able to regulate their weight.

The vegetable has been discovered is all its perspectives so profoundly that almost every dish that can be has been discovered. From starters, to the main course to desserts, you can get everything vegetarian. Some veg. starters include pakoras, parathas, tomato omelet, masala dosa, sada dosa, veg crispies etc. Main courses can include palak paneer, alu paneer, vegetable korma, dal, rice, chappati, rotis or puris. For a side dish you can select mango chutney, coconut chutney and raita. And finish your meal with desserts like modak, kulfi, burfi, kheer, gajar ka halwa, suji ka halwa, rasgula and the list goes on.

Indian desserts and have a global palate are much in demand as they satisfy the taste and are healthy. The same goes for its dishes, pickles and spices. Indian recipes has always been enjoyed a world market as it keeps one healthy and tickles the palate as well.

Vegetarian diets are found to keep the body weight in check and steer away from heart diseases. Eating raw vegetables is known to procure maximum vitamins as cooking washes away a few of the vitamins. Non-vegetarians are found to be more prone to cancer of the liver, lung, oesophagus, colon among others. Hence going veg means enjoying a longer and healthier life. No doubt vegetarianism in India is increasing patronised.
