La Porchetta – Enjoying Life the Italian Way
by: Dina Indrasafitri

The status of Pizza is somehow sadly reduced to unfit lows. Most people regard pizza as ‘last minute food' or objects of experiment, using everything you can imagine as its topping. Luckily, there are restaurants like La Porchetta, that treats the pizza as a work of art and constantly maintains its authenticity.

La Porchetta, originally an Italian conduct, was taken under the wings of ‘Rocky' an Australian businessmen who had been immortalised as La Porchetta's mascot. The business grew big in Australia, and is now finally available in Jakarta. Aside from the one in La Piazza, the restaurant also has a small outlet in TB Simatupang's gas station which functions mainly as a takeaway or delivery spot.

  • The Vibe
La Porchetta is located inside one of the stylish shopping-entertainment centers in Jakarta , called La Piazza. The interior is modern, cozy and urban. A fitting place for family's day out or chats with friends. The receiving area features a small yet cozy lounge. The whole place is colorful with a few paintings of Italian scenes adding soft touches to the whole scene.

Most of the dining area is located near a wall constructed of glass plates, thus letting the sunshine in and giving you views of the activities going on in La Piazza's entertainment spot below. In front of the restaurant is the ever-present ‘Rocky' statue, beckoning people to taste what the restaurant has to offer.

  • The Food
Mr. Riza, the manager of La Porchetta, claims that one of the proud trade mark of the restaurant's pizzas is the fact that all of its toppings are not smothered with cheese. This is not to say that the tasty cheese is used sparingly; it's just that the La Porchetta chooses to let the diners feast their eyes on the pizza's toppings and see what they are actually eating. And it would be quite an eye-candy too, all of La Porchetta's ingredients are ensured to be fresh and of high quality, giving an attractive presentation to their would-be devourers.

Every pizza restaurant usually has a ‘classic', and that includes La Porchetta. The ‘Original Porchetta' contains the necessary elements for great pizza: home-made tomato sauce, mozzarella, beef sausage, basil and olive oil. A more adventurous take is ‘The Lot', a crowded festive containing just every kind of topping you could think of, from capsicum, pineapple to anchovies. The idea of not putting cheese above the toppings especially works ingeniously for this one – for it is a colorful view indeed. For those with gourmet taste who feel that ordinary pizzas just wouldn't work for them, the Pizza Artigionale. This category includes the Rocky's special, with tuna and marinated seafood as its topping, or the smoked salmon pizza.

For lighter chomps, go for the Mushroom Balls, a very tasty offering. The large champignon mushrooms are filled with mozzarella and other treats, breaded and cooked to golden crisp. How fresh they are? Well, let's just say that you should be careful while cutting it because the juice might actually squirt from inside. If you need something healthier, go for the Caesar Salad, which contains croutons, anchovies and crispy Romain Lettuce.

Sweet treats such as Chocolate Mousse and Tiramisu Cakes are also available at La Porchetta. This may sound strange, but be sure also to order the Ice Lemon Tea, we dare say it is one of the highlights of the restaurant.

The SD Food Advisor's Take on La Porchetta
The restaurant somehow stands between the classy Italian dining and fast food-like family restaurants. But it is certainly not your regular last-minute pizza place. Extra care is given to maintain the freshness of the dishes. It even goes so far as baking pizzas on the spot when opening outlets on an event. Food is very acceptable and has a lot of varieties, yet still on the sensible side without too many grotesque experiments.
