Use your Mobile Phone as Modem

By: Ian Ball

How many ways are you using your mobile phone? Well, you can use it to make calls, to receive call, to send messages, to view messages, to play games, to take pictures and in many more ways. But the list is yet not over. You can use your mobile phone as a modem if you have your phone and PC enabled with IrDA or Bluetooth.

Connectivity process

Your PC can be connected to the Internet by using GPRS mobile telephone. Here it will act as a modem. But while doing so, you need to be confirmed essentially about two aspects -

Firstly, you must make it sure that you are able to connect to the Internet over GPRS feature by using the WAP browser in the mobile phone. Secondly, you need to make it sure that you are able to connect your PC to your mobile phone over IrDA or Bluetooth.

These aspects are important and subject to verification process because in most of the cases GPRS data services and Internet access are typically optional features. So you may need to ask your mobile phone service provider about the required availability of GPRS data service in your area along with relevant service charge or subscriptions fees.

Requirement of Data Service Plan

Tethering refers to the condition when you use your mobile phone as a substitute of modem. It is referred likewise by mobile phone service providers. DUN or Dial up Networking refers to the condition when it is used to dial the ISP. Both of the conditions can be ruled out by your mobile phone service provider if you do not have a data service plan.

Thus, a data connection is always required. So is the need for data service plan in order to use the Bluetooth enabled mobile phone as a substitute of modem. You are free to choose between limited and unlimited plans.

Expected Speed

It depends on the mobile phone you are using. If it is capable of handling top speed standards of the mobile phone network you are belonging into, it seems that you might get the connection speed as much as you are getting in your direct line.

Although in some cases, it is reported that the connection speed is far lesser than the speed of usual dial-up internet access. But it is mainly because those users use old mobile phones. These types of mobile phones are not enough capable of handling high speeds compared to hi-end newer mobiles.
