Mobile Phone and Effect on Health

By: Ian Ball

In general, it is seen that the user keeps his or her head close to the mobile phone while calling or receiving a phone call, if not attended by using a hands-free set. So considering primarily the effect on health, most of the researchers focus on the health of head; however other complications are also under considerations as well.

General Health Complications

A study, focusing on complications raised from the usage of mobile phone, conducted in Australia over 40 individuals, shows that the symptoms primarily include headache, heat sensation, lightheadedness, visual problems and nausea. These symptoms, in most of the cases, are temporary in nature and not prevalent after 1 hour even; however, in some cases, it may get prolonged for more time span.

Prevalence

Studies found that around 31% of the Norwegian as well as 13% of the Swedish users had been suffered from at least one of the symptoms frequently.

Neurological Effects

Studies conducted by Preece (1999) did not find any significant cognitive impairment in relation to mobile usage including short-term memory and reaction speed. However, Krause (2000) conducted a test on mental tasks in order to measure cognitive abilities and he showed an increased performance level for those individuals using mobile phones than those who are not using the mobiles.

Cancer

There is no proven record till date that confirms any direct link between mobile usage and the development of cancerous cells.

Brain Tumor

The old studies primarily focused on finding the relation between the growths of tumor to the electromagnetic wave transmitted by the antenna. Recent research, however, focuses on investigating the link between the usage of mobile phone and the prevalence of brain tumor.

Most of the studies confirmed that there is no direct link between these two factors, however the debate continued with few studies that affirmed the prevalence of tumor frequently occurring on the side of the head where the mobile phone is usually held.

Effect on cardiovascular system

Various researches have been conducted on the heart rate variability during sleep due to electromagnetic effect of mobile phone. None of the researches showed any significant correlation between these two factors.

Effect on Melatonin and Other Hormones

Initially, primarily during the first hour of exposure, melatonin and other hormones like cortisol get increased, however, after that it once again gets back to previous balanced state. Research conclude this is occurred due to the adaptation of body to the received signal.
