Mobile Phones: Keeping Us in the Office

By: Andy Adams

These days you'll likely have your own mobile phone so that you can stay in touch with family and friends and some even checking their emails on the go too.? People tend to use mobile phones as substitutes for MP3 players too, but the good thing is that you can put them down, ignore them if you need a bit of "me time", for those of us who have work phones however it can be a completely different case.

Since the days of portable phones being comparable to house bricks many workers in certain professions (engineers, Executives etc.) have had work phones that give their employers a direct line to the member of staff in case of an emergency.? Jobs like Engineers who may be on call 24 hours per day often require a worker to be readily available to jump into action at the drop of a hat.

A recent study has shown that many workers in almost every sector eight out of ten workers consider they work 11 hour days thanks to the increased availability of mobile phones and the internet.? Some in more extreme cases think that they work 14 hours per day.? One possible culprit of this increase in working hours is the rise of the Blackberry influence.

Blackberries are more than mobile phones they sync up with email accounts typically given out to business executives so that they can get their emails when on the move.? It's normally the movers and shakers in a business who need the information in their hand as quickly as possible like stock market traders and CEOs.

The trouble is that people have developed serious addictions to Blackberries and other mobile phones so much so that they check their inbox many times a day even when they have no new emails.? This addiction has developed its own moniker of "Crack-Berry" being a play on words of the addictive drug, and to many business folks and even celebrities it is an addiction!?

Recently pop singer Madonna and her director husband, Guy Richie confessed that they sleep with their Blackberries within grabbing distance so as to not miss that critical email at 3 in the morning.

More and more businesses are taking advantage of cheaper corporate mobile phones and the deals that they can get by providing mobiles for their employees and thus making their workforce more accessible.? In the future we may see more professions keeping tabs on us whilst at home, in the past I have been called out in the dead of night because a server went down and have rued the fact I had the work phone at my side.? Whilst it serves to help business operations keep running smoothly is going to become a problem when the next day your go-to guy is falling asleep at his desk because of the late night call out he had to respond to last night?
