Mobile Phone Communication
Mobile phones allow us to communicate at any time, anywhere (except maybe the movie theatre.) Parents are able to touch base with their children throughout the day, and friends can have a quick conversation while on the road. Texting allows for quick written communications and internet connectivity lets us send a quick email whenever we need to stay in touch.
With all of these communication options now available, the standard phone line and lengthy conversations seem like a thing of the past. Suddenly you're not tied down to a phone jack, and a quick text message lets you extract yourself from a traditional discussion. Why waste time talking about the weather when you can jump straight to the point?
Mobile Phone Efficiency
This modern straightforwardness is terrific for companies. Workers are able to efficiently send messages and emails while on the road or at a meeting with a client. It's much more convenient to call the office from anywhere in the world using a mobile phone than trying to find a landline and worrying about long distance charges.
But when these efficient workers go home at night, is there still a need for so much simplicity and directness in conversation?
Some believe that mobile phones allow us to communicate quickly with anyone, but that this modern convenience is making us more distant from each other. Sending quick messages to stay in touch rather than sitting down to a lengthy conversation about the more mundane items of the day is cheating us out of close relationships. Multitasking, such as driving or grocery shopping while chatting, doesn't allow us to focus fully on what the other end of the line is saying.
Regain Closeness
Mobile phones are not to blame for the distance springing up between many of us. We are. Teenagers have known for years that the phone is an excellent medium for conversation. Many of us remember sitting for hours chatting on the phone with a romantic interest or friend. We talked about anything and even sat and listened to the other breath. (At the time, it was very romantic.)
Use your mobile phone efficiently as much as you need to. Get through the work day with maximum productivity, but also use it the old fashioned way. Flop on the couch with a drink when you get home and put a call in to your mother. Pick up your mobile phone and get in touch with the people you care about - for no real reason other than to simply chat. You'll be taking your first step to getting close again.
