Mobile Phone Stores: is This the End?

By: Ian Ball

Just a few years later, however, the stores have all but disappeared. Where are the stores going, and do customers even notice their absence?

Small Spaces
For many customers, the answer is no. The large stores were often laid out well with plenty of room for foot traffic around product displays. While these stores are attractive, many retailers and customers discovered that visiting a full store is not really necessary to make decisions about mobile phones. There is a better way.

Mobile phones are small and getting smaller. Mobile phone retail establishments that sell these phones are sold are shrinking as well. Now, most shopping areas sport a simple kiosk or two rather than entire stores. Other retailers have moved into booths in larger electronic stores. And some have given up physical retailing all together.

The Online Store
Since the inception of the internet, online stores have begun to replace or supplement physical locations and their offerings. For many retail niches, a full inventory can be displayed online that would never fit in a physical location. Extensive product lines are available with reviews and comments from credible sources and actual buyers rather than a few select items with heavy marketing and little substance.

Because the virtual stores often require only a warehouse to house inventory rather than an place of business designed to entice customers, the overhead of online retailers is far less than the storefront counterparts. This savings is passed onto customers, and items purchased online often cost less.

This is true for almost all online retail items - including mobile phones.

Buying Mobile Phones Online
When buying electronic equipment, especially expensive items, many customers are more interested in tested reviews and commentary by industry experts than displays and marketing by the company. Playing with the product is nice, but many customers forgo the opportunity to handle the product in exchange for the cost savings and information provided online.

More mobile phones are being sold over the internet every day. By finding a reputable online store, customers are able to compare features of phones side by side, read product reviews and search for the best prices all without having to deal with pushy sales people or leave the comfort of home.

The comfort and convenience of online retailing is not reserved for the customer. Businesses selling the mobile phones online are streamlined and cost effective. There is little overhead and few staffing or inventory headaches. With benefits for both retailer and customer, it's no wonder mobile phone stores are disappearing with little notice. They are moving in a direction better for everyone - small and simple.
