The Convergence of the Mobile Phone and the Mp3 Player,

By: Mark Hirst

These days, most mobile phones that you can get include some kind of integrated music player that you can link to your computer and download your favourite songs onto. By making the phone into a direct competitor to mobile music players like the Apple iPod, the mobile phone industry has created a massive boost to the number of people who carry their music with them wherever they go.

One of the drawbacks in the past of a mobile phone that is also a music player is that the MP3 player on the mobile phone has been very limited in terms of the amount of memory that is available for storing music. Whereas 1GB is about the minimum that you will get on a dedicated MP3 player these days - enough to hold around 250 songs, with a mobile phone, you typically only get around 128MB at the most - about enough for 30 songs.

The problem with this limited memory is that it soon fills up because it is being used for a number of other purposes as well. If your phone also has a camera, a video camera, and you want to play games on it, you will quickly find that the memory is insufficient for your needs, and require an upgrade.

Thankfully, most multi media phones now come with a slot where you can put in an SD card which will allow you to have around 2GB of memory, which easily allows you to have the flexibility to use your phone as a music player, and carry enough different music with you to enable you to enjoy a wide variety of different tunes through your phone.

Another limiting factor about music on mobile phones is that traditionally the phones have had a non standard headphone socket, meaning that you can only use the headphones that come with the phone to listen to music on, and these are generally not as good as ones that you can buy from the shops. If you are really keen on your music, you should consider getting a phone such as the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones that include a standard 3.5mm jack for headphones, which allow you to listen to music on more comfortable earphones with better responses.

All in all, with a few additions, such as extra memory, a mobile phone is a perfectly capable music player, but all this is set to change later this year with the release of the Apple iPhone, which will integrate all the functions of an iPod to a mobile phone, and package it in the most stylish unit available anywhere.
