Mobile Phone Cameras How Theyre Capturing the World

By: Mark Hirst

Whenever you watch a news programme these days, one of the first things that you will see is that no matter what event is happening in the world, someone will have captured the moment on their mobile phone camera. The ubiquity of digital cameras on mobile phones, coupled with the ease with which you can send pictures over the network means that we now live in a world of instant news, in which we can capture the moment and then share it with the whole world as soon as it happens.

When you are looking for a mobile phone with a camera, there are a couple of things that you need to consider. The first is whether you intend to do anything with the pictures other than store them on your phone and share them with friends. If you intend to print them out, then you will need at least a 3 mega pixel camera to capture details and make the photos look good.

Some of the latest phones now include a 5 mega pixel camera built into them, and this is as good as many dedicated digital cameras in terms of the amount of detail that it can capture, although you will still find that because the lens is smaller than a proper camera, the pictures will be of a slightly lower quality, and very few phones include a proper optical zoom, instead relying on a digital zoom function, which will trim down the number of pixels to concentrate on a smaller area of the image.

The second thing to think about when choosing a camera phone is how much memory it has on board. A phone with a limited memory will only be able to keep a small number of photos on board, especially if it has a high resolution camera that produces large images.

A camera with an expandable memory is a good idea, most manufacturers now include a slot for a standard SD memory card, which you can then use to transfer files to your computer. You can also find machines in many supermarkets that will allow you to print out photos directly from the memory cards.

Although many camera phones come with a bundle of image handling software, you may find that this is quite limiting, and you might want to use a proper photo processing package such as Adobe Photoshop in order to edit images.
