Internet Crimes : Child Pornography

By: Jesse Miller

Spanish police officers arrested 13 persons during a campaign against broadcasting child pornography over the Internet. The Madrid authorities announced in November that persons arrested came from various Spanish provinces. They weren't caught on act, they are simply suspected to have stored and shared pornographic materials over the past few years.

The investigation has started back in march, after a woman that was looking for information regarding rising little children has discovered files that presented adults abusing a young underage girl. During the operation, the Spanish police confiscated 13 hard disks, over 500 DVDs and more than 750 Cds.

Of course, the effort of police forces around the world is remarkable, but fighting virtual media and virtual criminals can be quite tricky. Firstly, there aren't many laws against Internet criminals, and those that do exist are vague and can permit good lawyers to find several escape gates for their customers. Then, even if the police have various suspects on such a crime, they will encounter difficulties in proving that the suspects actually used their stored pornographic material for broadcasting purposes.

It would be easier if they could arrest the ones that make the child pornography films. But they are often lost amongst the millions of users that access such download sites therefore finding them is a quite impossible task. Of course, police officers can identify the persons that act in such films, and they could perform an investigation based on their declarations, in order to get to the producers. Unfortunately, no matter how many they catch, there will always remain few hundreds more to hunt down, and after they think they've eradicated the phenomenon, others already started fresh in the business.
