Remodeling A Home - Home Loans

By: Rachel Yoshida

Remodeling any part of a home is not easy or cheap, but there are a lot of ways that you can make it cheaper on your wallet and have it still look as good as those TV shows make their remodels look.

First things first, though. If you have an older home, you should probably have a home inspection before you decide to do any remodeling so you can differentiate between what you have to have done and what you want to have done. You do not want to place new tile in the bathroom only to find out later that the floor is rotted underneath it.

You need to get an estimate from a contractor that knows what they are doing before you let anyone start work on your house. Get references from the contractor you are considering hiring and make sure they really know what they are doing first. Shop around and find a contractor you can get along with, since this person and their crew will be in and out of your house for an indefinite amount of time, depending on the size of the job you need done.

Secondly, you need to shop around for materials and decide what you can live with. You never want to put upgrades into a home that are too expensive for the neighborhood the house is located in. Granite countertops are great for the suburbs where housing is more expensive, but if you are wanting to upgrade a property for efficiency and affordability in a sketchy neighborhood, go with something lower end so you make sure you will get your money back on the investment.

You can save money by doing some of the labor yourself, but make sure you really know what you are doing first. You can do a lot more damage than you think by trying to do something you are completely new at. If you want, watch the contractor and his crew do their jobs. Definitely do not be afraid to ask questions and they should be able to give you a reason for everything they do.

Try to avoid having custom items made for your home. Do a lot of shopping around and you may be able to find something really close to what you have in mind and if you can achieve almost the same look for a lot less money, why bother with ordering the custom item that you cannot return later if you decide you do not like it?
