There are so many different ways that we can invest the money that we work so hard for. Usually a home is one, if not the biggest investment make people will make in their lifetime. It is so important to protect this investment very carefully. When a home develops certain problems, it could destroy its worth and leave you owing a big mortgage payment each month and extravagant renovation costs if you do not keep it maintained as well as you should. When you invest small amounts of money in home repairs as they come along, it will prevent major destruction later.

One of the most relevant things that damage a home is water. Water problems can sometimes develop suddenly and cause a lot of damage that can take time and money to set right again. The easiest way to prevent water damage issues is by using simple inspections on a regular basis. These are inspections that you can conduct yourself and can usually be completed in less than a day for an average size home.

Start with a list of all the places that water comes into and goes out of your home. This includes under sinks, bathtub and shower connections, especially the ones that are hidden behind walls. Leaking in places that can not be seen are some of the leading causes of mold damage and just try to sell a home these days that has extensive mold infestation. It is essential to check the roof, in the attic, in a crawl space under the home, and a basement if there is one. Any water problems you find needs to be corrected as soon as possible.

When mold invades a home, it can make for a very unhealthy living situation. When mold has been allowed to grow out of control, it can result in having to have walls, floors, and ceilings torn out and replaced. Mold can be extremely difficult to kill completely when it has infiltrated places behind walls, under floors, and in attics. This kind of repair can be really devastating to your finances in a hurry. Prevention is the best cure.

Foundational issues will also cause a great decline in the value of a home. This can be caused by water leaking in around the base of the home, usually from outside. This leaking can be caused because water is settling too close to the home and it can eventually cause the foundation to sink sometimes, especially with older homes. Sometimes corrections to landscaping can correct this problem. If you notice inside damage occurring to walls, doorways, windows, or floors, you might have foundation issues. If these issues have progressed far enough along, you might need to engage a foundation expert to determine and correct the problem.
