The LG Ku990 Viewty - the Ultimate Cameraphone

By: Matt Sharp

The LG KU990 Viewty is a tri-band GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE, there's a large 240x400 pixel touch-sensitive display that can playback widescreen video clips, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD expandable memory, and the KU990 has an FM radio and a two mega pixel camera. The display is 3.2 inches diagonally, a little smaller than the phone's 3.5 inches.

The KU990 is a touchscreen-only mobile phone, in this case using a 3-inch display with 240x400 resolutions. The display is a minimalist white on black - no iPhone-style colored icons here.

In terms of specifications, the KU990 is tri-band, EDGE compatible and features a stunning 5-mega-pixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens and Xenon flash, Bluetooth 2.0, an MPEG4 video player and an audio player with MP3/ACC/ACC+/WMA/RA support. There's also a document viewer supporting Microsoft's PPT, DOC, XLS formats, plus PDF and TXT. Memory is via SD card - none built-in I'm afraid.

On top of the hardware specs, the LG KU990 Viewty comes with a comprehensive set of software. As you might expect, there's a multimedia player capable of playing MP3, AAC, WMA and RealAudio sound files, plus MPEG4, H.263 and H.264 video. The KU990 has a web browser with Adobe/Macromedia Flash support, a document viewer (supporting text, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat file types), plus an email client and messaging applications. We understand that the KU990 Viewty's interface continues the sleek, understated look throughout.

Amazingly, all these features fit in a handset weighing just 85 grams (according to LG), which is 50 grams lighter than the iPhone. The LG KU990 Viewty measures 103 x 54 x 15 mm, which is somewhat more compact than its Apple rival, and it makes the Viewty an absolute joy to hold!
