Saving Money in Lean Times

By: Anthony Petrucci

Personal finance affects just about everyone at some point as they journey through life. Some are taught at an early age how to properly manage their finances and others learn through trial and error. It seems as if the prices of just about everything keep going up and our wallets and bank accounts keep getting thinner. Below you will find ways to save on items ranging from groceries to household goods and services.

The Grocery Game
Grocery shopping no longer has to be such a chore and drain on your wallet when you play the grocery game. At , for just $1.00 for a 4 week trial you can sign up and start saving on your monthly grocery bill. The founder of the grocery game, Teri Gault, compiles a list of items that will be on sale each week in your local grocery store, she tells which coupons to clip and you go shopping. When you shop according to the list for a period of 4-12 weeks you will basically have created your own grocery store stockpile all for much less than if you shopped without the list. Your grocery bill will be slashed in half and therefore putting more money back into your wallet.

Fuel savings
Everyday driving by the gas station can make your heart sink a little more when you see the price has gone up another 5 cents. One can’t help but wonder how they can cut their monthly fuel bill. One such way to reduce your fuel cost is to reduce your commute. Consider moving closer to work or working closer to home. Also make sure to give your car a tune up. Change the oil filters, air filters and try using a fuel injection cleaner every few months. One last way is to check the web for deals. Several gas watching websites will tell you where and when prices are at their lowest.

Savings right at home
There are hundreds of dollars to be saved right in the comfort of your own home. You can start by turning off the lights and turning up the air when you are not at home. Invest in some ceiling fans to keep things cooler without raising your energy bill. Also, consider firing your lawn crew and cutting your own grass.  Several of my neighbors are trying to come up with money to stop foreclosure on their homes, and they have held garage sales and taken on second jobs to help pay the monthly bills. Another tip is to cook your own meals and make your own coffee at home. This will save you from running up to the local restaurant or coffee shop, therefore saving you time and money.
With a little planning, saving money in the lean times is a possibility for everyone.
