Be Organized at Work

"Dig a well BEFORE you are thirsty" Chinese Proverb

To be ORGANIZED is what's RATIONAL in life: what is EXPECTED. It means that we are able to function within formal structures (families, civic groups, work, etc.). However, one of the things that we find in life today is that basically man tends towards "disorganization" without an effort! There is a proclivity within man to lean or tend to non-disciplinary behaviors. In fact, one of the interesting facts of life is that which is shown by conscription. Nations which have a mandatory draft or on-going conscription policy find more order and discipline.

Life and nature are built upon an ecosystem wherein the individual parts assist and sustain one another. Things have to work in harmony. People have to work together. It all seems so simple until it gets down to our "going to work" in the morning. The DAY begins the NIGHT before!

There are lots of analogies that we can garner from the book of Genesis, but in chapter one we find the constant mention "and the evening and the morning" was the first day, second day, and so on. Let's put aside all of the spiritual and religious messages here and deal just with the organizational one. Your DAY actually starts the evening before.

"How you leave a thing or place is how you enter or start another."

When we close down a day, we are actually preparing for the next one. If you leave the office at five or six and rush home or to a dinner engagement with your desk cluttered, phone calls gone unanswered, emails not attended to, and no thought to the next day; you've just assured yourself of a difficult NEXT DAY! A very essential aspect of each day is how we CLOSE IT! Do we end the day in an orderly fashion? If the answer is YES, then the NEXT DAY will have a shot at being orderly. If the answer is NO, then we begin the day unorganized and behind! Yes, you can come in EARLY (before everyone else does) and try and get caught up but that should be a last ditch proposition and left more for the emergency situations and not the norm.

In like fashion, your LIFE should be so organized. Our lives are nothing more than DECISIONS that we make based on VALUES we embrace. Are order and organization important VALUES to us?

Stretching this concept out, how is your WEEK organized? Do you have a broad view wherein you have times to plan, time to meditate, time to refresh yourself or is it a dead run from start to finish? What does your MONTH look like? Is there TIME to do all the things that are IMPORTANT and not just those that are URGENT? In essence, have you already begun in August to plan your next year: 2000? That may sound silly to some but to the person that is ORGANIZED, the process has already begun and leads to a life that YOU control- not OTHERS!

We all get 168 hours in our week; no more, no less. How will you spend it? If you take charge of your life and not let others run it for you, you will find a life of peace and one wherein you cannot complain of the results as you made the decisions. If done well, PROMOTIONS should come your way because you will stand out as one who is different and unique among the rest. Being organized allows you to know when to say NO and when to say YES to new projects or opportunities. How much can you take on in a day, week, month? What SHOULD you take on?

Because "being organized" seems so simple and maybe non essential, we often over look it as one of the greatest tools that we have within which to determine the fate and destiny of our day- if not life.

"If you don't know where you are going, you could wind up someplace else. " Yogi Berra
