What is Better, a Higher Salary or a Better Company?

By: Prabhjot Bedi

I am often asked what is better, a higher salary or a better company?

My answer "Higher salary with the better company"

Its not an either or choice. I firmly believe you should strive for both.
But ideal situations are oh so difficult to come by and so I will answer the question.

What is better a higher salary or a better company?

No two ways about it, a better company.

A good company will make sure you grow, in responsibility, as an individual, as a professional and in remuneration.
A good company will invest in you.
A good company will make sure you work with brilliant people.
A good company will make sure you work on path breaking ideas and tasks.

You need to look at your career as a long-term investment & building exercise.

Think of it like building a house or any edifice.
Even if you are stacking only one brick everyday, it is still going to add up to a structure you can call your own.
If you go around laying a brick every hour, but at different points with no coordinated plan of how it all adds up, the building may never really get done.

The salary/pay you receive is for your skill set and the value of your contribution to the firm. The better the skill set, the better the contribution, the higher the salary.

When you start, your experiences will shape your behaviour, attitude and functioning at the work place. This is the time to learn from people who have been there and tasted success.
You need to ensure you are in the company of such people.

As you grow, you need to re-equip yourself and add to your skills. You can either go back to school or take up courses on your own or let the company you work for invest in your training and growth. Most good companies will have an elaborate in house training team to look after such needs.

This of course does not mean I advocate the cradle-to-grave philosophy, and neither do I want you to loose out on making money.

Just that when you can, choose wisely.

Choose what you can do, what you can learn, what you can contribute over what you can take home!

Cheers!
