Registered Office: a Necessity to Start your Company

By: Darvy Kaitlin

The concept of registered office is widely prevalent in the UK. This has become the most easiest way to lend credibility and authenticity to any company or business organisation. A registered office is basically an address that is registered as the official address of the company. No company in the UK can commence business operations without a registered office address.

A registered office address is essential to ensure that the company is recognised by the Companies House. The Companies House is a body under which all public limited companies have to be registered to be able to legally start their business operations. Any company can get itself registered with the Companies House by providing the registered office address. In fact, any change in the registered office address has to be notified immediately to the Companies House.

The registered office may or may not be in the same city from which the main operations and functions of the business is carried out. It is an important part of the company's public record and is used for receiving
correspondence related to company matters. These may be both public as well as legal in nature. This correspondence is then collected from this address and passed on to the functional office of the company. Any form of public declaration or public issue by the company bears only this address. Even advertisements and other promotional material like press releases bear the address of the registered office.

Maximum number of times, a registered office is just an address. People even rent out their apartment addresses as registered office addresses to companies for a particular amount as rent. They may even forward the correspondence that comes in the company's name to the functional address of the company. The registered office may or may not bear any sign to signify that it is the official address of the company. At the most, probably a small board imprinted with the company name may be kept or hung at the address.

These days a number of agents and companies provide registered office services, both online and otherwise. They provide services like giving a valid correspondence address and taking up the responsibility of receiving and forwarding the company's mails.
