Change Vital to Growing your Business

By: Sue L Canfield

As a business owner, you want your business to grow to the next level. You work, push, and expand but can't seem to get push through the next plateau. The challenge lies in understanding that business growth involves change and change seems difficult.

Change often means realizing that you don't have all the answers and finding different ways to approach the same challenges. This can be difficult for small business owners because we are often wary of the unknown and tend to stick with what we know and are comfortable with. We resist change.

Here are three ways to effectively implement change:

1. Look at change as a vital, positive aspect of succeeding. View change as a good thing, start looking for ways to change, and implement small, simple changes intentionally. Create an atmosphere in your business where change is expected as vital to growth. It can be as easy as sending a thank you card to each and every customer.

2. Explain why change is needed to everyone involved and it will be much easier for change to be accepted.

3. Teach the skills necessary to implement changes. Allow room for mistakes and create a support system for dealing with challenges as they arise.

Offer the unexpected. Go above and beyond what your customer expects. No matter how great your customer service, it can be better. Make your product or service something people will tell others about.
