A Business Plan - the Road Map to your Dream

By: Karin Muller

Let me start by asking you a couple of questions.

Do you have a business plan?

Did you know you needed one?

Before I go any further, let me assure you I'm not talking about a business plan that will take you 5 months to complete. Nobody has that kind of time. I'm simply talking about a road map for your business. No complicated facts and figures, predictions, and so on. Just a simple plan where you will set your objectives and that you can use to measure your achievements.

It's amazing how many people want to start an and don't have a plan. They decide one day that an online business is what they want and they jump in head first without thinking. You wouldn't do that if you were opening a shop in the High Street, would you?

Let me give you a few examples to illustrate the problem.

You're going on holiday for a couple of weeks. Do you just jump on a plane and go? No, of course you don't! You plan your trip, don't you? You start months before, and the first thing you do is book the days with your boss.

Then you need to decide where you are going. That has to be based on how much money you have to spend on this. You may need to save for that special trip. You plan how long you'll be staying, so you can book the flights. You also need to book accommodation, transport and any activities you plan to do there. You may also have to find someone to look after the cat while you're away.

In other works, you have to plan you holidays. So why does you business require any less? Just like your holidays, you need to know where you are going, how to get there, how long it will take and how much you have to spend.

In an exclusive seminar that took place in London in 2005, Frank Garon described the internet as "the great equalizer that gives us the chance to reclaim our lives". This is powerful stuff and it's true. If you've never heard of Frank Garon, he used to be a truck driver in America. He's now a millionaire and all achieved through the internet. He's the first to say you need to have a business plan.

So what do you need for this business plan?

1.The first is to have a dream. It's got to be a big dream. Just to make money is not enough. What do you want to do with the money you will make? You need to own that dream and make it tie in with your business plan.

2.You need to know how much time you are willing to commit to this. Take into account your job and your family commitments. Be realistic about how long you can spend on it and for how long.

3.You need to know how much money you will be able to spend on it. Where will the money come from?

4.You need to have an achievable goal and a time frame to reach it. Let's say you want to be making 50K a year within the next year.

At this stage this is all you need. This is your plan. You need it set in stone in your mind so you can work towards that dream.
