Bamboo Flooring - Questions You Must Ask Before Buying

By: Dean Caporella

If you are shopping for bamboo flooring there are some guidelines you need to be aware of before spending your hard-earned cash.

Bamboo flooring is a sensible choice given it's environmental qualities however, that aside, you are no doubt looking to enhance the appearance of your home plus looking for a durable surface which can stand the test of time.

How Tough Is Bamboo Flooring?

Many will obviously be concerned with how long their floor will last. This is understandable particularly if you have plenty of people traffic through your home. In the case of bamboo, there really isn't any need to be concerned.

One of the qualities associated with bamboo floors is it's toughness and durability. In fact, did you know it compares exceptionally well with most other hardwood floors. Oak, which is considered just about the most sought after hardwood, is no harder than most bamboo surfaces.

There's even better news. When doing price comparisons, you'll find bamboo is also less expensive. So you get the qualities of the most popular hardwoods available and the benefits of price.

When Selecting Your Flooring Material

Shopping online is the obvious first choice for many today however, in the case of bamboo floors, always try to see the product before making your decision.

If you like what you see online then have some samples sent to you. At least there won't be any arguments when you finally decide what you want. Your flooring should be factory pre-finished and cured and make sure it's finished with anti-abrasion treatment.

The finished product should be ready to install when you order. The last thing you need to be doing is chipping and cutting the material. Ensure you give precise measurements of the area to be covered. If you are not sure how to measure your intended flooring area then ask a professional to do it.

Age Of The Bamboo

Another question you should ask is how old is the bamboo being used. Make sure it's mature enough before it goes into production as immature product could present some problems.

There is a strong leaning to using product grown in China which is reported to have ideal growing conditions. The product from areas such as South China consistently produces the toughest product anywhere in the world.

If you live in an area of moderate to high humidity take this into account when shopping. Let the manufacturer know that humidity is a factor in your area and how will this affect the bamboo flooring.

Finally, don't buy unless you are getting a warranty. This is just commonsense shopping. How long should your warranty be? Flooring is usually a long term project so 25 year warranties are not uncommon.
