Moving in the Big Apple: Nyc Moving Tips

By: Robert Blake

New York is an enormous town. The sheer size of the city is almost incomprehensible to those that have never seen its towering skyscrapers and warren of streets. Moving in this town can be a considerable undertaking; just navigating the maze of streets requires familiarity with the city that no GPS will ever provide. Most moves in NYC are "local." That is, they are from one part of the city to another. Since the city is almost a world unto itself, though, the term "local" may seem out of place.

There are two choices for any move, whether they are local moves or interstate moves. You can choose to move yourself, which will involve packing your own possessions and renting a moving truck, or you can use a moving company. Moving companies are extremely convenient and much more affordable than you might think. Finding the right local movers is vital to having the best move and avoiding the hassles that are usually associated with the process.

To start with, you'll need to vet any potential moving companies. This will require some research on your part; thankfully, the Internet is a great place to find the information that you need. Start by checking out the reputation of local movers; you'll need to find customer feedback for this. Once you have chosen a few likely candidates and have narrowed the field, you can start to compare rates. Remember that not all fees are listed up front; read the fine print to get the full story.

There are two choices within local movers: full service and pickup/drop off services. Each has its own benefits. If you are pressed for time, choose a full service mover. They will pack your belongings, load the truck and unload everything at your new home. If you want to save money and have the time, pick up services will do the trick. You will have to pack your own belongings, though they will load them in the truck. This can be an economical choice, though you'll spend some of that saved cash on the packing supplies.

New York movers can get your stuff to your new home, but it is your responsibility to make sure you use a licensed and bonded company. Using substandard movers will result in substandard service, potential damage to your possessions and even theft of your belongings.
