A Wholesome Family Sport

By: Yap Tat Meng

When was the last time you had a good memorable family sport? Can't remember, right! It's not surprising because everyone seems to be too busy with their own thing. Good family exercise workouts have been relegated to a low priority event. As a result, family coherence has been dwindling ever since the advent of the internet. Quality time seems to mean spending it in front of the computer, and family fun seems to focus around Daddy playing a round of 'Counter Strike' with junior. Well, life need not be that monotonous. There are some forgotten games and sports that have the ingredients of giving back the fun and wholesomeness back to the family. One of the most affordable one being roller skating at the local indoor rink.

An interesting revival of roller skating fun is the game of 'rexing'. In its simplest form, skaters go and flip, twist and dance to the rhythmic music played in the background. On the skating rink, you can actually do almost anything with your quad skates. Here, the whole family can take part together, and for those who are advance skaters, they can even invent new dance movements, incorporating daring body flipping like those of ice figure skating. For the less experienced, simple turning and stopping movements are sufficient to expand some extra body calories. Besides rexing, there are other more strenuous movements like 'jam skating' which the young at heart love.

The beauty of bringing the whole family to a game of sport at the roller skates rink is that everyone can have fun there. Besides having loads of fun, there is the opportunity to fully exercise all the muscles. Indeed, doctors recommend roller skating to the elderly folks because it is really good for the heart. It is also a means to improve one's balancing skills, besides toning up the leg muscles.

From a sociological point of view, having family members participating together at the roller rinks enhances family coherence. After a two hour game, most members will be able to get rid of all their stresses, and when they adjourned to dinner, the food will taste better than anything that they had eaten before. The other thing is that roller skating is very affordable. Skaters need not bring their own skates as they can rent a pair for just five dollars. With entrance fee of about six dollars, you could have a wholesome game without breaking the bank. However, roller skating rinks are not available in many smaller towns, so if you have one in your place, do make full use of it. In case you are considering bringing the family to a game of golf instead, bear in mind that the cost will amount to ten times more expensive, and also not forgetting the membership fees as well. Wish you all good skating.
