Tips for Choosing a Sink for your Outdoor Kitchen

By: Mike Lombardy

The two most important components of an outdoor kitchen are a grill and an outdoor sink. The sink becomes indispensable for washing and storing dirty utensils. Most sinks start around $100?and go up to $400.?

The place of installation also plays an important role. Look for an ergonomically convenient place. The size depends on personal preference and how much counter space you have available. Big sinks for outdoor use may be a bit inefficient in design. A one bowl sink should be adequate. However if you cater to large number of people try installing a big one.

Stainless steel is the most preferable material as it is resistant to corrosion and can easily withstand outdoor weather. The only disadvantage of stainless steel is that they tend to be noisier than most other sink materials. However good quality stainless steel sinks apply a heavy coating of vibration damping material to the underside.? Other commonly used sink materials?are Porcelain over cast iron, solid ceramic and plastic.

Water supply to the outdoor sink is either drawn from home's water supply or a hose. For purposes other than washing the dishes you need only a cold water supply line. For supply of hot water you could either run a separate hot water lines from the inside the house or run a cold-water line only and install an on-demand water heater near the sink.
