Replacement Residential Skylights

By: Nedd'agostino
If you already have a skylight in your home you probably already know about the many benefits they provide. You know about the increase in beauty, warmth and value. You may even know about the health benefits they provide, as well as the money they can save you. But you also know that if something goes wrong, they can be frustrating. That's why knowing where to find replacement residential skylights is so important.

For instance if your skylight should break from heavy hail or start to leak in a bad storm, your first temptation might be to just shingle over it and be done with it. But before you do this, consider your other option, that is simply replacing it. Perhaps maybe you had the wrong kind installed to begin with.

If you live in an area where hailstorms are common, then you'll need a stronger skylight. You may not want to use glass, but instead use a polycarbonate or acrylic skylight. Acrylic has a lot of advantages. It's economical, and can even be purchased to filter whatever percentage of light you choose. And there's no need to worry about ultraviolet light with these either.

But if it's extreme strength you're after, then you can't do any better than the almost unbreakable polycarbonate skylight. Polycarbonate is used to make bulletproof windows. How's that for strong? And the material is even lighter than acrylic.

But don't forget that glass can be made stronger also. All you need to do is get a glass skylight with a protective film added. The light will be stronger, and the film will also serve to filter some of the light also. And if you get double panel glass you'll not only be making the light even stronger, you'll be making it a form of insulation. And that will decrease your energy usage also.

Perhaps you want a certain type of skylight. Maybe you like domed, pyramid shaped, round or tubular. These different designs make a difference in the aesthetics, but they also serve another purpose. Different skylights are made for different roof types. So if you have a peaked roof or a flat one, make sure the skylight you get is made for your roof.

Proper installation is another way to make sure your replacement skylight will last a good long time. A lot of people try to do this job themselves. It's really not all that difficult, but if you're unsure if you know what you are doing, it's best to call a professional. There's nothing worse than finding out you made a mistake when the first storm hits. Nobody likes to have a big bucket to catch water sitting in the middle of their living room floor.

Don't be so quick to immediately call a roofer when your skylight breaks or leaks. Make a few good choices and you'll see that getting a replacement residential skylight is almost always a better option.
