Breast Pump Rentals

By: Eric Morris

Many new mother choose to rent breast pumps rather than buy them. Breast pumps can be rented at the hospital where the baby is born by the doctor's prescription.

Hospital-grade breast pumps are made of a sturdy mechanical quality and are comparatively large and powerful. They provide enhanced suction and cycling for mothers and infants. The hospital-grade electric breast pump will be provided on rental basis only when direct nursing at the breast is not possible during the neonatal period. The concerned physician has to submit documentation for the same.

One of the reasons for renting the hospital grade electric pump is when the mother has been discharged from the hospital, but is still under treatment for postpartum complications which might preclude direct nursing at the breast.

Another reason is when the infant is still hospitalized even after the mother is discharged. Also, in the event that the infant has complications like a congenital neuromotor, oral dysfunction, or any other congenital or neonatal acquired condition then direct nursing at the breast might not be possible. In such circumstances the physician can provide the necessary documentation for the renting of the hospital-grade breast pump, provided an over-the-counter pump failed to meet the mother's needs.

Sometimes, when the mother is receiving any therapy with pharmaceutical agents then that might render her breast milk unsuitable for infant feeding while in the therapy. Also, if the baby develops a medical condition or requires hospitalization, then nursing might not be allowed on a regular basis. These are a few situations where the mother need not buy a breast pump but rather rent it from the hospital. The physician then has to provide the requisite documentation along with the treatment authorization request. Detailed documentation of the medical condition as well as the diagnosis and prognosis has to be provided. The physician need to mention the expected length of time the pump might be needed.
