Bicycle Clothing: Dont Forget The Gloves

By: Adampeters
Be sure to have all the necessary protective gear and accessories to make mountain biking a safe and enjoyable experience.

Staying Safe With Mountain Bike Accessories

The beginner in the mountain bike world can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the array of accessories available for the sport. Walking into a bike shop can be a dizzying experience for someone unfamiliar with the many items available. But being a bit selective, the new mountain biker can select only those accessories and equipment items actually needed and leave the rest. Of course, the first rule of smart buying in this case is to use resources to buy safety equipment, bicycle clothing and accessories that will make the experience what it should be.

Mountain Bike Helmet

How basic the bike helmet is in its function. The helmet is there to protect the head from serious, even life-threatening, injury. Yet too many try to save a dollar or two on this crucial item, increasing their chances of no longer being able to compete in mountain biking at all. Those new to biking should not be fooled by the simple task the helmet is asked to do, however. The new, durable lightweight helmets are the result of years of trial and error, research and design. The first item a bike rider should invest in is a quality helmet. Case closed.

Gloves For The Mountain Biker

While most riders will immediately think of biker shorts, jersey, socks, shoes and even a helmet, many will not give a thought to one important part of the bicycle clothing - the gloves. Mountain bikers put a tremendous amount of pressure on their hands, and that alone is a good reason to wear gloves. But falls do happen in mountain biking, so wearing gloves may also protect the hands from injury when the rider goes to the ground. Serious injury is possible when the hands come into contact with sharp edges on the rocks or the hard ground.

Many bikers prefer to wear gloves that cover only half the fingers, giving them more flexibility during the ride. Gloves that cover the full finger protect more skin, obviously. While some of this is personal choice, there are many experienced mountain bikers who urge the new rider to wear gloves that completely protect the fingers and palm.

Eye Protection

This area of biking equipment is not one that is given thought as often as bicycle clothing, helmets etc. But eye protection is important when riding on rough terrain and in close quarters. Dust, insects, and gravel - all these can get into the eye and blur the vision, making a challenging situation become dangerous.

One last suggestion when considering mountain bicycle clothing - invest in a good pair of shoes made for the sport. Companies have focused on specific sports in the past few years and good shoes suitable for mountain biking are available.
