The History of Grace Kelly From Monaco

By: Tania Machowska

Grace is an American young girl from Philadelphia, puritan raised. Grace was an exceptional child, later as a film star full of contradictions. Although she was very reserved Grace managed to get over the obstacles that made her a shy person and she grew out to one of the best actresses Hollywood has ever known , in 1955 Grace won the Oscar for best actress.

Graces father Jack was a passionate rower, he won gold at the Olympics in 1920 and her mother Margaret was an excellent swimmer. Margaret was the daughter of German Aristocrats, the American beauty ideal and on top of that the first female teacher who practiced gymnasium at the university of Pennsylvania.
The Kelly family lives in Philadelphia and they were known to be a beautiful healthy and sportive close family.

As a child Grace played with an amateur theatre and soon she found out that she wanted to be an actress. It was amazing how such a young and lively young teenager was able to perform in such a subtle and refined way.
After ending high school she was determined to be accepted at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which she entered in 1947. She moved to New York where she moved in at the Barbizon Hotel, a very chic institute for girls with an undiscussed behaviour.

Grace played about 18hours a day, the comments of one of her teachers in the first year is discouraging; “Grace is a nice girl but much to shy to ever achieve anything in life. She has success being a model but she isn’t a top model and will never be one. She misses glamour and sex appeal. She has nice shoulders but she doesn’t have a bosom.”

Grace never gave up, she convinces her clients and soon her portrait appears on the walls of Manhattan. From this point on Grace grew as an actress; Her first important meeting was with producer Stanley Kramer, who gave her the part next to Gary Cooper in High Noon. After that a part in Mogambo next to Clarke Gabel.
Master of Suspense Mr Hitchcock was convinced after seeing both movies, Grace was the perfect actress for his movies; Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief (filmed at the Cote D’Azur, grace was of course not aware that one day this beautiful place will be hers)

More movies came along; The bridges at Toko-Ri, Green Fire, The Country Girl and High Society were she played next to Bing Corsby, A Star is Born, …

Grace had a stormy love life, one with many contradictions, her first love was Don Richardson a high school boyfriend. That was actually the only one who had the same age. Gene Lyons was the second in line and already 10 years older, Ray Miland was 21 years older then Grace, more in row until she met Prins Rainier in 1955, Grace finally found what she was looking for, the time to start her own family.

Prince Rainier was a relaxed humoristic and self confident young man, who was very mature for his young age, 30 years old in 1955. Grace enjoyed his humour and Prince Rainier loved her smile.
Grace and Prince Rainier got married in 1956 and expected their first born in 1957, Caroline was born on January 23, 1957. Prince Albert 14 months later.

It wasn’t simple in the beginning, Princess Grace needed to convince the people of Monaco that she was worth being a first lady, and eventually everybody, ever Monegask and every Royal family just loved Princess Grace, there wasn’t any other young woman that was so dedicated, sophisticated and warm towards her country, community, her husband Prince Rainier and her family as Princess Grace grew out to be.

Princess Grace was known to be a leading woman within her family, but she knew where her place was within the Royal Family, Prince Rainier was a leading man she was his counsellor. Monaco experienced a difficult time when it almost vanished from the card, a crucial moment from 1956 until 1965. This period damaged a bit the fairy tale from Princess Grace. Grace became the prisoner of her own country, she couldn’t go out anymore without an escort and Prince Rainier estranged himself from Grace and their marriage.

The relation between Grace and her daughter Caroline wasn’t that good, Caroline was sent away to boarding school for 2 years, when she came back she wasn’t the reserved, polite little Princess anymore but a rebel. The relationship with her mother eventually never turned out as it needed to be. A couple of years later Princess Stephanie, the youngest of the 3 Grimaldis turned out to be just as her sister, a rebel with no responsibility.

Princess Grace dies in a terrible car accident, accompanied by her daughter Stephanie. Speculations around the accident didn’t make it any easier for Stephanie, journalist blamed Stephanie as being responsible for driving without a license, but an expert confirmed that this couldn’t have happened.

Grace died on 14 September 1982.
